He restores my soul.” Psalm 23 (NRSV)

ENTERING INTO THE PRESENCE

PRELUDE & QUIET MEDITATION

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

CENTERING MOMENT

Congregational Centering

Leader: We live in a loud, busy, and very complicated world.

People: We rush to meetings, practices, and concerts, hoping to simply catch our breath once or twice in the process.
Leader: Sadly, we often just accept our busy lives as expected or as assumed, so we often give up all hope for rest and peace.

People: When life gets chaotic, we need only look to scripture to see the importance of finding solitude.
ALL: Let this time of worship be a time to quiet our hearts, minds, and to
seek rest for our weary souls.

Opening Song: UMH # 572 “Pass It On”

PASSING THE PEACE- Conclude by singing: “Shalom to You”

Shalom to you now, shalom my friends,

May God’s full mercies bless you, my friends,

In all your living and through your loving,

Christ be your shalom, Christ be your shalom.

OPENING TO THE PRESENCE

Gathering Prayer

God of rest, in our world of craze and chaos we forget to care for our mind, body, and soul. We rush to meetings, shuttle loved ones to events, and fill our calendars to the brim. O God, we are tired! Holy One, teach us to find solitude; teach us to find quiet; teach us to find You in peaceful moments. We know You call us to take the gospel to the world and to work to make it better. Teach us how also to find rejuvenation and the true meaning of Sabbath rest.

PASTORAL PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen

HYMN OF REST: UMH #393 “Spirit of the Living God”

Children's Time

SCRIPTURE READING

First Reading: Genesis 21:1-19 The LORD dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as he had promised. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Now Sarah said, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.

Second ReadingLuke 4:1-14 NRSV
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’” Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country.

For the Word of God in Scripture,

For the Word of God among us,

For the Word of God within us,

   Thanks be to God!
